Website Redesign Checklist: 10 Signs Your Site Is Costing You Customers

A website that looked great five years ago can quietly lose you customers today. Design trends, devices, Google's requirements and customer expectations all keep changing. How do you know when it's time to redesign instead of patching things up?

1. It isn't comfortable to use on a phone. Pinching, zooming and tiny buttons send mobile visitors straight back to Google.
2. It loads slowly. If your homepage takes more than 3 seconds on 4G, you are losing visitors before they see anything.
3. You can't update it yourself. Waiting days for a developer to change a phone number or add an offer is a sign of an outdated setup.
4. Your bounce rate is high and enquiries are low. Traffic without leads usually points to a design, messaging or trust problem.
5. It doesn't reflect your business today. New services, new locations or a new brand identity all deserve an updated site.

The redesign checklist (without losing your rankings)

A redesign done badly can wipe out years of SEO progress overnight. Follow these steps:

Before you start

• Record current traffic, top pages, rankings and conversion numbers as your baseline.
• Export a full list of existing URLs. Your top pages must survive the move.
• Define goals: more leads? Online sales? Faster updates? Every design decision should serve them.
• Survey a few customers about what they look for on your site.

During the build

• Keep the same URLs where possible. Where you can't, plan 301 redirects from every old URL to its new equivalent.
• Carry over titles, meta descriptions and the content of pages that already rank well.
• Build on a staging site, never on the live website.
• Test on real phones, multiple browsers and slow connections.

After launch

• Submit the new XML sitemap in Google Search Console.
• Watch the "Pages" report for 404 errors and fix them quickly.
• Check that forms, WhatsApp buttons and analytics events all fire correctly.
• Compare traffic and leads against your baseline after 30 and 90 days.

Redesign or rebuild?

If the underlying platform is sound, a visual refresh and content update may be enough. If the site is built on outdated technology, a full rebuild on a modern CMS or a framework like Laravel usually costs less in the long run.
